Sustainability is the new bottom-line of our economy. The throw-away, resource-intensive business model is no longer viable and it does not work in the long run. Like most business trends, sustainability has not emerged out from a vacuum. It is a reaction to the growing risk and uncertainties companies face, such as scarcity of natural resources, the rising price of carbon and looming environmental legislation, as well as external pressures from consumers, potential clients, and investors. Sustainable companies have an edge in attracting talent, too. Subsequently, what companies are finding is that once they view their business through a sustainability lens, opportunities are emerging that might not have otherwise been recognized.
